An air pillow is used for winterizing a pool to help prevent damage from ice and snow during the winter months.

Features:

  1. Prevents Ice Damage: Water expands as it freezes, which can cause damage to the pool walls, equipment , and plumbing. The air pillow sits in the center of the pool and acts as a buffer by absorbing the expanding pressure of the ice, preventing the pool's walls from being pushed out.

2. Prevents Water Accumulation: The air pillow helps to keep the pool cover elevated above the water level. This allows any rain, snow, or melting ice to collect in the center of the cover rather than pooling around the edges. It helps to prevent sagging or water buildup, which could damage the cover or lead to mold growth.

3. Keeps the Pool Cover Taut: By creating a raised area in the middle, the air pillow ensures that the cover stays tight and doesn't sag under the weight of the snow and debris. This reduces the risk of pooling water that could stretch or tear the cover.

In short, the air pillow is a simple but effective tool to prevent your pool from winter damage, ensuring a smoother transition when you open it again in the spring.

Choosing Your Air Pillow Size

  • For small to medium size pools ( Around 12x24 feet or less): A typical air pillow size would be about 4 ft x 8 ft. This works well for smaller pools that don't have a lot of surface area.
  • For Larger pools (Over 24 ft in Length): Larger pools may require pillows around 6 ft x12 ft or even 8 ft x 16 ft, depending on the pool size.
  • For Round Pools; If you have a round pool, you can generally go with a square pillow size that fits well with the pool's diameter. A 6-ft square pillow is a common choice for most round pools with diameters between 18 and 30 feet.

Consider the pool Cover Type:

Solid Pool Covers: If your pool has a solid cover, you might need a larger air pillow to create a significant elevation in the middle to prevent water accumulation.

Mesh Pool Covers: If your pool has a mesh cover, the air pillow will still help keep the cover elevated, but the size may vary based on the cover's weight and how much snow or debris you expect to accumulate.
