A-1 Service From Beginning to End.

The service was excellent, had several conversations with them about the heat pump from sizing to planning the installation. Ordered it one day and it was delivered the next, too bad I live to far to deal with them on a regular bases for all the pool needs.

Good and Inexpensive Heat Pump

This review is for the Hayward HP55CLEE1 heat pump only, installed May 2024 and reviewed a few weeks later.

I have a 15'x30' 70,000 litre pool and wanted to convert from natural gas heating to an electric heat pump. Our pool gets very little sunlight, and we always keep a solar cover on.

--- The Good ---
This small 55,000 BTU heat pump is good enough to raise my pool temp about 1deg C per day, running 14hrs per day (9pm - 1pm) even in the fairly cold weather we've had recently. It draws max around 2.5kW of power, with the COP output dependant on ambient temps. Having it AHRI certified was also one of the reasons I chose it.

Although slow to heat compared to gas, it’s a quarter or less cost for the same temperature increase. Having it take two weeks to go from 10C to 30C at the start of summer is fine for when we open the pool to when we start swimming once the weather warms up.

With the ultra-low over-night rates in Ontario at $0.029/kWh...the heating at night is basically free, but less efficient due to lower temps at the start of the season.

I was -very- surprised at how well they've managed to keep the both the fan noise and compressor noise down, good engineering!

Soft-start VFD works great and eliminates startup current spikes found in non-VFD models at the same price.

I already had a 15A 220V line from the previous heater, so saved money on that too with this lower output model.

Installation was also straightforward and easy. Leveling feet would have been nice, and I recommend it’s very slightly tilted to the left for water to drain out properly.

--- The Okay ---
There are no advanced functions for this heat pump. The only thing the manual tells you how to do has is use the basic timer to turn it on and off once during a day (I knew this when I purchased it though).

This is basically a "turn on and forget about it" heat pump that will pull its 2.5kW of electricity until it's at temperature and then turn off or ramp down.

This heat pump is a brand-new model year for Hayward, so hopefully there aren’t any issues that creep up in the coming years. This applies to any manufacturer with any new product. I’ll come back here and add a new review or amend this one if I get any problems in the coming years.

If you want -any- sort of bells and whistles, there are much better options like new MOOV TurboSilence, that are available at a higher price. That one has phone app connectivity and such, but I couldn’t justify the cost increase for the features. Also, it looks like the brand is relatively new to Canada, and I was unsure of the parts support if something did go wrong in the coming years. Pricing may be similar at higher btu models.

--- The Annoying ---
Aside from setting the temperature, you can set the timer to turn off and on once per day. In the two weeks since I’ve been running it, the timer has seemingly messed up twice and I’ve found it running when it was supposed to be off.

Come on Hayward, you’ve given this thing one “advanced” function and it’s not dependable? I’m hoping to connect with Hayward support about this.

When it kicks on between 4pm – 9pm when it’s supposed to be off, and my TOU hydro rate is $0.30/kWh, it gets expensive quickly. I’ve placed a small flag by the fan output so I can see from inside the house if it’s running or not.

There are also tons of other configuration options in the "digital display menu" (I use that term very loosely, it's a very simple 3-digit digital display lol) but nothing is documented in the manual or online that I can find. You'd need to have reference documentation for what each menu item means to touch anything.

If I had to guess, as it’s a new product for this year, the hardware for this product was ready to go before the software team was. So, they dialed back the functionality to just a timer to get the product out the door and to retailers. There appears to be a wifi module in it based on the product label on the unit, but there is no documentation around it or any sort of app that might allow for better controls from your phone. Maybe something that can be enabled in the future?

--- Summary ---
If you’re looking for an AHRI certified, inexpensive and quiet heat pump with a VFD from a reliable brand running on a 15A 220V circuit, this is a good choice.

However, note that by getting such a small output unit, you really need to know your heat loss of your pool to ensure it's enough.

All in all, I’m happy with the purchase, with the caveat being that it’s been two weeks lol…I wanted to get this review out as I’m probably one of the first to install this new model.

Ultra quiet!

Works great! I was worried it may be a little under powered for our pool (round 21') but it maintains the temp overnight, even when it plummets to 7 celcius! Really happy with this purchase. Setup was not difficult.

Shipping & Company Review Only - 5 Stars

This was the first time I've ordered from Pool Products Canada. I ordered the Hayward Heat Pump on a Sunday, and it arrived in perfect condition two days later on Tuesday!

They reached out after placing the order to inquire if I had any comments or further questions too.

I was really happy to find a company in Ontario that had the latest Hayward variable speed heat pumps as well. Great initiative on their part.

Very impressed with the service.

I'll submit another review of the actual heat pump once I have had a chance to get it installed and operational in about 4 weeks.
